The Monarch's Way And Long NewtonStarting from the car park head towards the old goods shed. The railway was closed as part of the Beeching cuts in the 1960's. Looking over to the right is the new Millennium Green. Continue along the course of the railway line to meet the Tetbury to Malmesbury road. Turn left and head up the hill towards the hospital. Follow a sign posted footpath across the hospital drive and over a stone stile into a field and continue along ahead along the edge of the field to reach a stile. Go over the stile and turn left to go along a metalled drive towards a farm. Go through the farmyard and through a gate on the right and follow a track across the field towards a gate in the hedgerow. The path signs now show that the is being followed. Head straight along the field boundary and continue over the stile into the next field. Take the path ahead (not towards Church Farm) to a stile and a footbridge across a ditch to join a lane. Cross over the lane and continue straight ahead past a pillbox which was part of the defence of Long Newton airfield and continue straight on passing Newton Gorse and over a crossing of paths to leave the Monarch Way behind. There should be a tall chain linked fence on the right. Stay on this track to cross a field to go through a small gate and across another field to the corner of Ashley Marsh copse. Go through the gap in the hedge into another field. Immediately turn left and follow the left-hand hedgerow to enter another field and turning slightly right head towards a gate in the hedge and join the Fosse Way a Roman Frontier Road linking Axminster to Lincoln. Immediately turn right and head along the track to cross over a lane and continue straight ahead along the track passing the buildings of Long Newton airfield, a former wartime aerodrome. Continue on the track going through a gateway, passing a farm to join a metalled drive to emerge on a lane. Turn right and follow the lane to the green on a junction of roads. Turn right and right again and enter the village of Long Newton passing the Manor House. At the next junction follow a finger post pointing left and continue ahead ignoring any merging footpaths. Continue to follow the footpath across paddocks to join a lane. Turn right and go along the lane to the church. On leaving the church, cross over the lane and straight ahead through a gate and along a broad green track. Note the young trees on the right which have been planted in memory of local people. Where the track bears left continue ahead and go through a gate into a field. Keep to the right hand hedge and continue to the main road. Cross over the road bearing right and head towards Tetbury, retracing steps along the railway path to return to the car park. other InformationClick On for more information about the Monarch Way |
