Churchill Village

The Oxfordshire village of Churchill is located close to the county border with Gloucestershire between the towns of Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Norton. The village has several variances of its name through history, including Cercelle, Churchell, and Cherchell, but in the current form since 1537.

There is evidence of humans living in the Churchill area since pre-history and several archaeological remains are still visible around the parish.

Churchill, standing on one of the higher parts of the Cotswolds is a pleasant village, albeit rather unattractive compared with other local villages but, what Churchill lacks in beauty is certainly out-weighed by the number of interesting buildings and monuments in the village.

A stroll around the village can be interesting and at weekends during the summer months, a visit to the Village Heritage Centre will help visitors to understand the local history. The centre contains old maps and village records from the 17th century including some interesting facts about Churchill's two famous son's Warren Hastings (1732 - 1818), the first Governor General of India and William Smith (1769 1839) said to be the "Father of British Geology".

The tower of All Saints church stands prominent over the North Cotswolds. The tower based loosely on Magdalene College, Oxford and forms part of the church designed by James Langston, who life is remembered in the village by an elaborate fountain.
