Cotswold Churches
There is hardly a town or village that is without a
place of worship and many of these are of historical interest. Churches
in the Cotswolds can date from Saxon origins and many of the present
buildings have Saxon relics.
Most of the churches date back to the 11th century
when, after the Norman Conquest the great buildings were erected but,
most suffered during the Dissolution in the 16th century. Some like
Tewkesbury Abbey and Malmesbury Abbey were bought from the King, to be
protected for the people, and future generations.
The wealth of the medieval wool traders provided the
cathedral size churches seen in some of the towns. Many of the
benefactors are remembered in brasses that lie in quiet peace within the
church walls.
