Cantores Chamber Choir
Are coming again to St Mary's Parish Church in Tetbury on Saturday Feb 26, and to St Peter's and St Paul’s in Northleach on Saturday March 12, (both performances at 19.30) with a powerful programme of exquisite and complex baroque music.
- Handel’s mighty Tour de Force Dixit Dominus, together with
- Beatus Vir by Monteverdi
- Praise the Lord O Jerusalem by Purcell and
- The Great Fantasia in F Minor for the organ by Mozart
As conductor John Holloway writes, Handel was only 22 and studying in Italy when he completed his ‘Dixit Dominus’.
Clearly wishing to make an impression on his hosts, he created one of the most bravura choral works of the Baroque period, making huge technical demands on chorus and soloists alike. Each of the nine sections demonstrates some special feature of the fashionable Italian style, be it sparkling texture, breath-taking part writing or astonishing harmonies.
We will be joined in this performance by the soprano Grace Carter and mezzo-soprano Louise Booker, organist John Wright and the Cantores String Ensemble. Tickets £10 available from Tetbury Tourist Information Centre, by post from Lynne Whitworth on 01453 840878, or online at www.cantores.net.
